Preserving With Spirits at Mezze Bistro

To further our commitment to feature independent distilleries and give a nod to the age-old custom of boozy fruit, we thought a class featuring canning with spirits made perfect sense. Apart from freezing, it’s about the simplest preservation method there is.

On Sunday, September 11, Mezze Bistro + Bar hosted Preserving With Spirits as part of Berkshire Grown’s Preserving the Bounty workshop series. Beautiful weather provided the opportunity to host the event outside overlooking the pond, home to our resident ducks. Our group had a great time learning how to make spirit infusions, related cocktails and condiments during the two-hour workshop.

To kick off the afternoon, each participant received a fresh, fiery hot bloody mary made with chile-infused vodka and homemade tomato juice. Lauren Gotlieb, our knowledgeable leader and founder of BeeSweet, began with a brief talk about what we would learn during the workshop while guests enjoyed their cocktails in the sunshine. Our first hands-on creation was spiced vodka from Berkshire Mountain Distillers infused with habanero peppers and garlic from Mighty Food Farm, the same infusion used to create our bloody marys. We then moved on to quick pickled carrots and cherry tomatoes. Next, Lauren guided the group through Blueberry Bourbon — bourbon infused with local wild blueberries from Benson Place. We mixed the infusion with Sweet Brook Farm maple syrup to create a beautiful and delicious cocktail and then created a tipsy trifle with homemade blueberry cake, High Lawn Farm whipped cream and the remaining bourbon-infused blueberries. Yum!

As an added bonus, we each took home a jar of quick pickles, and a bottle each of infused spiced vodka and blueberry bourbon. Let’s just say there are no quick pickles left in my fridge and the blueberry bourbon is on the calendar for opening at its earliest possible date! A terrific event all around. Special thanks to Lauren Gotlieb and Caitlin Harrison for their work in making it happen.

Mezze Hosts Preserving in Spirit(s) Workshop Rescheduled for Sunday, September 11

Berkshire Grown’s Preserving the Bounty is back and Mezze Bistro and BeeSweet are participating featuring Berkshire Mountain Distillers spirits!

Committed to the resurgence of the lost art of preserving food, Berkshire Grown presents Preserving the Bounty: Canning, Pickling and Keeping the Harvest. A series of fun and educational community canning workshops have been coordinated in partnership with more than a dozen Berkshire restaurants, food purveyors and partners throughout August and September.

On Sunday, September 11th from 1 – 3 pm, Mezze Bistro + Bar and BeeSweet in Williamstown will present Preserving in Spirit(s) where you can learn about spirit infusions and related cocktails and condiments. Led by Lauren Gotlieb, founder of BeeSweet, spirits will be sourced from Berkshire Mountain Distillers, produce from Mighty Food Farm and Benson Place plus maple syrup from Sweet Brook Farm. Each participant will leave with one 250ml bottle each of infused vodka and bourbon. Must be 21 and over. The fee to participate is $40.

RSVP at mezzebistro@mezzeinc.com or call 413.458.0123. For more info on Preserving the Bounty, visit the Berkshire Grown website.

Dinner Party Download Features Mezze Cocktail

Mezze Bistro featured on Dinner Party Download on American Public Media in July!

Featuring the story of Cheshire’s Mammoth Cheese, Dinner Party Download asked us to craft a specialized drink to accompany the tale. Nancy Thomas, our fearless leader, with less than 24 hours’ notice, created ‘The Berkshire Localmotive’ — a drink consisting of Berkshire Mountain Distillers bourbon, aged apple brandy, local maple syrup, Peychaud’s bitters + a splash of sparkling apple cider. Local is our mantra, and we believe a mammoth cheese sent on a three-week, 500-mile trek from Cheshire, MA, to Washington, DC, deserves a strong drink with local ingredients to honor the occasion.

Dinner Party Download — a fast and funny radio show of news, culture and unconventional wisdom — is one of the most popular audio podcasts on iTunes. The show is produced by America Public Media. Although you cannot listen to the segment on the East Coast at the moment, you can subscribe to the podcast here.

Melissa Lillie + Sean Riley Art Opening at Mezze July 11

Mezze Bistro + Bar of Williamstown will host an art opening on Monday, July 11, featuring selected works from Berkshire-based artists Melissa Matsuki Lillie and Sean Riley, from 5 to 7 pm. The event is free and open to the public, with light snacks and a cash bar.

The current Mezze Bistro exhibit is a combination of existing contemporary works exploring paintings and textiles using a variety of textures and patterns.

Melissa Matsuki Lillie’s artwork references natural and manmade forms using a personal visual language of vibrant colors and complex layers to reflect the macroscopic and microscopic world. Her paintings evoke a sense of space that has been flattened and layered, revealing strands and structures of line and color interacting fluidly with hidden landscapes. Elusive reference points can often be discerned through the interwoven layers. Lillie received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Originally from Maryland, she now lives in the Berkshires.

Sean Riley received his BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA, in 1999.  He then went onto the University of Pennsylvania to receive his MFA in Painting in 2004. Upon graduating from UPenn, Riley was awarded the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant. Since 2004, Riley has been in several group exhibitions in New York, Philadelphia and North Adams, MA. His first solo-exhibition, ‘Everything is OK’, was held in June of 2010 at MCLA Gallery 51 in North Adams. Over the next year he will be a resident at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY, and exhibiting his work in Charleston, SC, and in Troy, NY.

The artwork selected for Mezze comes from Riley’s latest body of work that takes inspiration from an extended stay in Italy as well as a fascination with quilt patterns. As part of his artistic practice, Riley is now making quilts in addition to paintings. He currently lives and works in North Adams, MA.

Photos from Union & Field Art Opening

Fans and friends of Union & Field and Allium Restaurant + Bar came out on Thursday night to celebrate the opening of Timothy Nazzaro and Maureen Meyer’s works. The current Allium exhibit is a combination of site-specific installations and existing contemporary works exploring photography, fabric manipulation, found objects and storytelling. Union & Field’s exhibited works will evolve over time and are available for sale. For more info, contact Timothy Nazzaro and Maureen Meyer at 413.776.9442 or visit www.unionandfield.com

Union & Field Art Opening at Allium on June 23

Allium Restaurant + Bar will host an opening presented by Union & Field, featuring selected works from Berkshire-based artists Maureen Meyer and Timothy Nazzaro on Thursday, June 23, from 6 to 8 pm. The event is free and open to the public, with light snacks and a cash bar, and will take place prior to the start of Vinyl Night, a weekly music event at Allium.

The current Allium exhibit is a combination of site-specific installations and existing contemporary works exploring photography, fabric manipulation, found objects and storytelling. Meyer and Nazzaro are the exclusive featured artists for this first installation. Union & Field’s exhibited works will evolve over time and are available for sale.

When Union & Field was first approached about the project, their initial reaction was to “keep things simple, and make it personal.” A wall of keys collected from friends around the world are spaciously arranged next to a portrait of a woman, whose negative was found in a box of mystery photographs purchased at an estate sale. In a white frame and attached to handmade paper is a piece of fabric dyed in indigo with areas of resist, creating an x-ray-like image that Meyer uses as inspiration for her current series of acrylic paintings. Two of Nazzaro’s gelatin silver photographs taken in Big Sur are placed between an informal collection of smaller printed materials pinned to the wall and a large scale, inkjet print depicting the final seven photographs taken with a malfunctioning Polaroid camera.

Maureen Meyer and Timothy Nazzaro met in New York City, both working in the fashion industry. They relocated to North Adams in 2008 to pursue their interest in fine art and reconnect with nature. In 2010 they founded Union & Field. Union & Field is a salon for contemporary art set in the domestic interior loft of artists Maureen Meyer and Timothy Nazzaro, an industrial space that was once home to a 19th-Century textile mill in North Adams, Mass. The salon unites artists working predominately in the visual arts in an intimate and engaging setting to stimulate unique, uninhibited experiences with contemporary art and culture. It provides an inviting space for visitors that transcends the exhibition site of a conventional commercial gallery and the formalities that often accompany it, instead fostering an open field for dialogue and viewing without limitations.

Additional works may be viewed at Union & Field by appointment. Please contact Timothy Nazzaro and Maureen Meyer at 413.776.9442 or visit www.unionandfield.com for additional information.
